Science:
During 3rd grade we will study three Science Units.
-Rocks and Minerals: We will test and observe properties of Rocks and Minerals. We will use these properties to try and identify the different samples. Some properties we will study are luster, streak color, feel, smell and hardness.
-Plant Growth and Development: We will take our Brassica plants through the entire growth cycle during this Science unit. We will plant our seeds and watch them grow! Once they begin to sprout we will measure their growth spurt. We will thin and transplant extra seedlings to ensure the best opportunity for growth. Once our plants start to flower, we will pollinate our plants with bee sticks. After the seed pods grow, we will thresh the seeds and the plants will come to the end of their life cycle.
-Critter Habitats: During this unit we will have the opportunity to create habitats for our critters. We will provide the necessities for our fiddler crabs, African Dwarf frogs and Millipedes. We will observe their physical features and how they enable the critters to survive in their natural habitat.
Social Studies
During Social Studies in 3rd grade we will focus on Communities. We learn about Urban, Suburban and Rural communities around us. We will learn about Native American communities in the past and present. We will learn about the Powhatan and the first community at Jamestown.
